Hoops for Homeless – Raising Awareness for Youth Homelessness

Hoops for homeless is an all-volunteer organization led by an executive board representing non-profit organizations in New Britain. Our mission is to raise awareness for homeless youth and families in New Britain.

Background

Hoops for the Homeless is a three-on-three basketball tournament that started in New Britain in 2013 to benefit homeless youth. The event is produced in collaboration with the City of New Britain and the Downtown District, Consolidated School District of New Britain, New Britain Recreation and Community Services Department, New Britain Police & Fire Departments, Friendship Service Center, Prudence Crandall Domestic Violence Center, Boys & Girls Club of New Britain, and Central Connecticut State University.

  • In the past seven years, Hoops for Homeless gave nearly $46,000 to partnering organizations.
  • Hoops for Homeless has given $11,500 in scholarships to college-bound New Britain High School graduate students, who were homeless during their teenage years.
  • Hoops for Homeless draws an average of 50 teams from across CT and thousands of spectators each year.

Tournament Guidelines

Basketball Guidelines:

  • Teams will consist of 3 or 4 players with 3 players on the court at a time. Players on a given team may consist of all boys, all girls or coed.
  • If a team does not have all teammates at the start of the tournament, it will be considered a forfeit
  • Games will be officiated by certified officials. Additional rules will be determined by the tournament directors to ensure a competitive environment for participating teams.
  • Teams are encouraged to wear similar colored t-shirts.
  • Each team must have a team leader that is 18yrs. of age or older. Team leaders must stay with their team until their team wins the division or is eliminated from the tournament.
  • All teams guaranteed 2 games

Rules:

  • Team Roster: 3 player minimum, 4 player maximum, 4th player is substitute
  • Game Duration: 10mins (running time) for elementary level or first to 11pts.; 15mins (running time) or first to 16pts. for middle school, high school and adult divisions.
  • Initial Possession: coin flip
  • Overtime: Coin flip determines possession. First team to score a basket wins the game
  • Scoring: inside three point arc is 2 and behind three point arc is 3
  • Score Limit: 11 points elem.; first to 15 points or 15 minutes end time.
  • Possession following a successful field goal: defense gets possession ball to be dribbled/passed behind the arc, failing to do so results in no basket and change in possession
  • Possession following a dead ball: "Check ball" Exchange behind the arc (at the top)
  • Following a steal, turnover, a defensive rebound: ball to be dribbled/passed behind the arc. Failing to do so results in no basket and change in possession.
  • Following a shooting foul: 1 free -throw, 2 free throws if foul committed behind the arc, if made basket no foul shots although possession is awarded.
  • Foul limit per team: 5 team fouls, after 5 fouls all fouls result in 1 free throw
  • Penalty situation: One (1) free-throw
  • Substitutions: allowed in dead ball situations
  • Referee: 1
  • Time/Score keeper: 1
  • Time-outs: 1
  • The ball is considered as "behind the arc" when the offensive player in possession of the ball has both feet behind the 3 point line

How to Get Involved

This tournament is open to youth (grades 4 to 12) who would like to participate in a fun semi-competitive community event. All proceeds from this event will go to local projects that directly address homelessness of children and families in New Britain. The event is a 3 v 3 Basketball tournament. Minimum of 3 games played in a round-robin format followed by playoffs.

Teams must report to their designated courts by 9:25am

Entrance Fee per Team: $50


Registration fee at the time of online team registration is not required, although encouraged to confirm your space.
No team will be turned down due to lack of funds, but we encourage youth teams to be sponsored by local organizations. Please contact us for details.
